Top 10 Types of Dog Anxieties (and How to Calm Them)

Dogs are curious, loyal animals, but that doesn’t mean they’re immune to anxiety. In fact, anxiety is common and there are tons of triggers. Here’s a list of 10 common triggers:

  1. Thunder – This loud and unknown sound leaves dogs confused. You might try a thunder jacket, also known as a “dog anxiety wrap.”
  2. Fireworks – The same as thunder, dogs just don’t understand them, and the 4th of July is the day where most dogs get lost due to noise. Again, a thunder jacket can come in handy here.
  3. Alone – Being alone will certainly frighten them, but you can help them feel more comfortable by leaving a treat (i.e. peanut butter frozen in a Kong) that will take a while for them to finish.
  4. Vet – Going to a new environment even with a kind stranger will scare a dog. The best way to calm them in this instance is to give them lots of affection while you wait.
  5. Car – A car ride is full of shakes and unknown things, but giving them a comfy, dedicated spot in the vehicle can help them feel more at ease.
  6. Stairs – Stairs are a difficult task for a dog’s motor skills, but treat rewards and positive reinforcement are key in helping them conquer stairs.
  7. Strangers – Strangers are an obvious concern for a dog trying to protect their owner. However, you can help by asking strangers to give your dog a little treat whenever they visit.
  8. Objects – Strange objects, like vacuums, can easily startle a dog. If you’re using an object that you know makes them anxious, take them to a room away from the issue and give them a nice treat to occupy them.
  9. Separation – Being separated from their closely-bonded owner will worry the pet. The way to go here is a progressive “time away” technique. You leave the house for 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, and so on until your dog is used to you leaving and always coming back.
  1. Aggression – Forms of aggression will spark an anxious defense. Controlled visits with strangers and other dogs (i.e. to a dog park) can be great ways to relieve anxiety around strangers and other dogs.
